Summer Puppet Arts Training Intensive

Puppetry is elusive. Pragmatic and measurable learning is rare when it comes to quality puppetry.

These links provide information on workshops and performances that I consider to be the most valuable in the endeavor to discover puppetry.

Both the Sandglass Institute and the O'Neill Puppetry Conference require a tuition and room and board. I have had many conversations with individuals who have been concerned with the cost. Knowing the benefits of both of these valuable learning experiences I would easily argue that if a person is truly interested in the art of puppetry they can't afford not to attend.

Eugene O’Neill Puppetry Conference

This is a week long intensive workshop that offers many different components depending on a person's interests, but culminating in a performance at the end of the week. This is an excellent way to work with puppet artists from all over the country. It’s an excellent place to workshop ideas with support and guidance from experts in the field. The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is an inspirational atmosphere well worth the tuition.

The Conference also offers a "pre-conference" workshop that occurs for three days before the main conference. These pre-conference workshops zoom in on two specific areas one is building and the other is manipulation. This is an ideal option for people who want to focus more specifically on these areas.

Sandglass Institute

This is an intensive workshop in performance and study of the relationship between the puppet, the puppeteer and its theatrical use.

This is an extremely valuable experience for anyone who is truly interested in increasing their performance abilities and gaining a better understanding of puppetry and theater.

The Center for Puppetry Arts

Located in Atlanta this facility offers many departments devoted to quality puppetry. They produce shows year round both for families and adults. They have a museum that is an absolute must-visit for anyone who cares about the art of puppetry, and they have an outreach educational program that teaches puppet workshop to schools in the Atlanta area and beyond.

The Center also regularly produces what has become an institution knows as XPT or Experimental Puppetry. The Center has been doing XPT for over 20 years, and recently they have cast a wider net to include video submissions.

If you have any questions regarding these workshops or institutions I'm more than happy to answer emails.
